Properties near McClellan Park for sale
Out of a handful of historic neighborhoods that give character to Sarasota McClellan Park is perhaps the oldest. Today like many of the other historic west of the trail neighborhoods, McClellan Park is a mix of architectural home styles, price points and residents.
Centrally located just south of Hillview, McClellan Park exudes the warm feeling of an older in-town neighborhood even today. Unlike the orderly and ridged grid system of most of Sarasota, the streets in McClellan Park are flowing curves lined with old trees, tropical landscaping and an inspiring mix of older homes, remodeled and updated homes and a few new homes.
Residents of McClellan Park are walking distance from shopping and dining along Hillview and Osprey, and are just down the road from downtown Sarasota and nearly equidistant from the sugar Sands of Siesta Key and the beautiful beaches of Lido Key.
A centrally located in-town neighborhood which has seen a growth in popularity and prices over the years, McClellan Park was unique even when it was first envisioned in 1916.
Originally developed on 56 acres that stretched from Osprey Avenue to Sarasota Bay south of Orange avenue in 1916 by sisters Katherine E. and Daisietta G. McClellan. The two sisters had previously visited the area in 1910 and later hired a landscape architect to design the park and every lot had a view of the bay. The presence of an Indian mound on the property gave the sisters the inspiration to name the streets with names from the Seminol language. The McClellan sisters had an ambitious plan for their neighborhood that included a clubhouse, tennis courts even a 50'x150' yacht basin was dredged to be at least 5 feet deep during low tide. Advertised as a 'high class residential section' homesites were to feature the modern advancements of electricity, wells, telephones and septic systems -all together an impressive and attractive list for a community in 1916.
Despite the attractive list of amenities and a top-notch marketing campaign that included a popular tennis tournament McClellan Park, just as most of Sarasota's other premier locations, took a long time for buyers to catch on. In fact after just a year the sisters had to drop the lot prices as many seemed to feel McClellan park was a little too far from the center of town. In 1923 a development company new to Sarasota bought the unsold lots and overtime they eventually sold.
Today residents can appreciate this unique neighborhood as they walk along the many sidewalks that line the gracefully curved streets, and the variety of homes that clue visitors into the long-lived past of this city neighborhood.
Homes in McClellan Park range in price from the 600s to over two million and range in styles from 1930s colonial revivals, to Bungalows, to newly built Mediterranean, Key West or modern.
