The land that now forms Palmer Ranch was initially owned by the pioneering Chicago businesswoman, socialite, and philanthropist Bertha Palmer in the early 1900s. Known for her larger-than-life, lavish lifestyle, Palmer became interested in the Sarasota area, and while others view the land as  boggy mosquito swamp, Bertha Palmer envisioned the area as a thriving agricultural enterprise, leveraging the vast tract of land to cultivate crops and raise cattle, and a tropical retreat.

Bertha Palmer also played a pivotal role in shaping the wider Sarasota area. Arriving in Sarasota in 1910 she established her now historical winter residence on Little Sarasota Bay. Palmer developed a keen interest in agriculture and horticulture, leading her to pursue the improvement of Florida agriculture techniques, develop elaborate gardens, and construct various structures that contribute to the Historic Spanish Point garden and historic site today. Although her original house, named The Oaks, no longer stands, elements of landscape architect Achilles Duchene's designs remain evident.

Following Bertha Palmer’s death, her sons, Potter Jr. and Honore, inherited the land and continued its development as a ranch. In 1972, a significant portion of the land, approximately 12,000 acres, was sold to Hugh Culverhouse, the founder of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Palmer Ranch was formally established in December 1984 as a Development of Regional Impact (DRI) under Section 380.06 of the Florida Statutes. Today, the community spans approximately 6,733 acres, bordered by Clark Road to the north, U.S. Route 41 to the west, Interstate 75 to the east, and the junction of State Road 681 and the Legacy Trail to the south.

The influence of Palmer Ranch extends beyond its immediate boundaries.
